Shortly before midnight, everything that had been brought to the Alves’ family home over the previous ninety-six hours had been lined up in the hall. Just to be sure, Alex sent Franck to do a final check in every room. He inspected the living room and kitchen, went upstairs to look in the bathroom, and didn’t bother with the parents’ bedroom because none of them had been in there. As he was making his way back downstairs, he passed Aurélie’s bedroom. The door was ajar, so he gently pushed it open. She was at the window, anxiously waiting to see them leave. When she sensed Franck behind her, she gave a start.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to frighten you,” he apologised.

Aurélie gave him a disarming, ironic smile. He didn’t know how to react.

“O.K., maybe we should have thought of that four days ago, when we took your home over.”

He took a step inside the room, and she took one towards him.

“We’re going now. And don’t worry about Rhinoceros. We’ll put him back in his cage tonight. You won’t see him again either.”

Another step. Chest pounding and stomach churning.

“Thank you,” Aurélie whispered. “For defending me. You didn’t have to.”

“I wanted to.”

From the ground floor, Alex’s stern voice brought Franck back to business.

“I really must go now,” he said, turning on his heel.

She took hold of his arm, bent closer, and stole a kiss on his mouth. She did this so quickly that Franck only realised it afterwards, his moist lips the only proof.

“You didn’t have to . . .”

“I wanted to,” she said, blushing.
